How to connect AI to your calendar. One sentence and the meeting is in Google Calendar
One sentence and the meeting is in Google Calendar. That is a connector at work. What connectors, plugins and MCP are, and what to connect so the AI gets no more than it needs.
You type one sentence to Claude. Meeting with the supplier on Thursday morning, at the office. A moment later the meeting is in Google Calendar. That is what it looks like when you connect AI to your calendar.
Connecting is the easy part. Deciding what to leave unconnected is harder.
What a connector is
A connector links the AI to another service. Anthropic describes Claude's connectors as a way for Claude to retrieve data from your apps and take actions in them. In practice it can put a meeting in your calendar or leave a draft in your inbox.
Google makes it easy to see. The Google Calendar connector lets Claude view your events, and also add new ones and change existing ones. The Gmail connector lets it read email, write drafts and send messages. By default Claude asks for your approval before each send.
Through a connector Claude works within your own permissions in that service. If your account can see the whole team's calendars, Claude will see them too.
In ChatGPT the same thing is called apps. You connect them in settings, and for each one you can choose whether ChatGPT asks before it reads data or does something.
MCP, the open standard behind connectors
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. Anthropic published it in November 2024 as an open standard for connecting AI assistants to the systems where data lives. Many connectors are built on it, and custom connectors in Claude simply connect to remote MCP servers.
For a business owner this means a connector does not have to come from a directory. If your CRM or order system has an MCP server, Claude can connect to it. If it does not, a developer who knows your system can write one. With a custom CRM that is usually simpler, because the code belongs to you.
Plugins and skills go further than a connection
Besides connectors, Claude has skills and plugins. A skill is a set of written instructions, sometimes with scripts, that Claude loads when it fits the task. A plugin bundles skills, connectors and helper agents into one package. You will find all of them in one directory, opened from the left sidebar of the Claude app.
Here is a risk that is easy to forget. A skill or plugin from a stranger can contain instructions you do not expect, such as telling Claude to connect to an unknown address on the internet. Anthropic also warns that a plugin can run a program on your computer with the same permissions as any other program you run.
How to connect AI to your calendar and email safely
If the AI reads your inbox, it also reads email from strangers. Someone can hide an instruction for the AI inside a message. Anthropic describes exactly this attack and advises manual approval for actions that are hard to undo, such as sending messages. A few rules are worth keeping from day one:
- Connect only what you need. Booking meetings needs the calendar. Email and the drive can wait until there is a concrete job for them. Anthropic gives the same advice and says to connect only services you trust and need.
- Prefer connectors from the official directory. Anthropic reviews directory submissions for safety and security, and keeps reviewing them after they are listed. Connect a custom connector only to a server run by someone you trust.
- Read the permissions it asks for. When you connect, the service shows what the connector will be able to reach. If it should only read your calendar but also asks for your email, stop there.
- Install skills and plugins only from sources you trust. Read what is inside before you switch them on. They are files with instructions, sometimes with scripts.
- Disconnect what you do not use. A connector you forgot about still has access.
The calendar is a good first choice for another reason too. A mistake in the calendar is visible at once and easy to fix. A sent email has already gone.
If your inbox or CRM holds client data, check with a lawyer on what terms you can share it with an AI tool.
To start, connect one thing, ideally the calendar, and keep the setting where the AI asks before it acts. After a few weeks of use you will know whether you need more.
